Sorry about that extended outage there. My web host (Dreamhost) had a system-wide outage. Ick. Anybody have any experience with a reliable web host? I’ve heard good things about AN Hosting. Any other recommendations? These outages are becoming way too common.

I’ve used Pair for years and love it. I host a very busy discussion forum and haven’t had many problems at all.

I host my own website. It is not that difficult.
I use Clarkconnect. The webserver is a Pentium III computer. I only added memory, a second netcard and a good big harddrive to it. The domain name costs something like $35 a year. The software is free.

Some ISPs don’t allow you to hot your own site at your house, so be sure to check your TOS if you’re going to do this. They can and will disconnect you.

I have used GoDaddy for a number of sites. They are great in my opinion. They have awesome uptime.

I think Hostgator is one of the most reliable of the cheaper hosting available today.

I’d hosted some sites with Dreamhosting too, and have given up because of reliability problems. I’ve also had some personal sites at LiquidWeb for many years now, and have been pretty happy with them.

I’ve used pair for at least 8 years on shared accounts and run a popular site that gets a lot of traffic. The only problem I’ve ever had is having to move database servers about once a year to get a faster/less busy machine. Other than that, they’ve been fantastic.

Tim, any idea how much bandwidth this site serves every day?

With 2,500 to 3,000 “unique visitors” and just shy of 10,000 page loads each weekday, the site is pumping out roughly 1.5GB on weekdays, and a total of about 8GB per week.

That’s as of right now. Ask me again in a few weeks and it will probably be higher. The site has been steadily growing in popularity.

Wow, very nice. My site runs 2Gb-3Gb and 25k-40k hits per day, and since it’s a discussion forum it’s all database hits. As I said, other than a yearly database move to a faster server to keep pace with our growth, I’ve never had a problem at Pair.

Try Media Temple… great uptime. My wife and I have found that the saying “you get what you pay for” applies in web hosting as well.

Please do not use ANHosting. I speak from experience.

    Modwest.com is a great host.
