This is probably the best comment on there:
"Dear Stupid Hipsters: For many years, since Seattle's founding, Capitol Hill was one of the wealthiest areas of Seattle. Ever leave Broadway or Pike/Pine and walk around 14th Ave (Millionaire's Row)? How about up Aloha near the park? Cross 15th and head east towards Interlaken. Capitol Hill has only been the bastion of the "counterculture" since the 70s or so. In relative terms, you, stupid hipsters, are the newcomers. This neighborhood was the bastion of the rich long before your arrival. So shut up. If anyone is "ruining" things, it is you.
Actually, if you want to talk about "ruining" the hill, it was "ruined" the day that white settlers came and started chopping down trees for their giant mansions. But I suppose that doesn't bother you as long as your dive bar doesn't get razed for new housing. Losers."
I couldn't agree more. I lived on Capitol Hill for several years. It's a fun place to be when you're new to town, are looking for "love" (or similar), and like to party. I got fed up of the junkies, dry heaving alcoholics, and hipster skateboarders outside of Crack in the Box asking me for money, though...
The main issue with the condos is that it does indeed remove some of the "character" of the place. But depending on the particular place, I'm not sure that's a bad thing. For example, if they knocked down Ballet and the Comet, then where would I go to get my dose of swarming urinal flies and juvenile cockroaches embedded in rice? (yes, these things actually occurred)
Luckily, all the hipsters can shut up for a decade or so as development is pretty much dead now, as we all know. In a decade when it starts up again, those same moaning hipsters will be living in Wallingford or Bellevue with young and hungry homosapiens hanging off their boobs, complaining about the hipsters they once were, and obsessing over schools.
