{"id":2175,"date":"2008-07-22T11:39:30","date_gmt":"2008-07-22T18:39:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seattlebubble.com\/blog\/?p=2175"},"modified":"2014-10-12T21:16:23","modified_gmt":"2014-10-13T04:16:23","slug":"local-economic-news-looking-like-national-headlines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seattlebubble.com\/blog\/2008\/07\/22\/local-economic-news-looking-like-national-headlines\/","title":{"rendered":"Local economic news looking like national headlines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There were a couple of stories in the Seattle Times over the weekend pertaining to the health of the local economy.\u00a0 The first was an <a title=\"Seattle office market could turn in tenants' favor next year\" href=\"http:\/\/seattletimes.nwsource.com\/html\/businesstechnology\/2008061625_timeswatch200.html\">article on the commercial real estate market<\/a>, highlighting a forecast for falling rents.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Commercial real-estate brokers James Keating and Sean Barnes have one word of advice for their clients looking to lease big chunks of office space in or near downtown Seattle:<\/p>\n<p>Wait.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By the end of 2009, or the first quarter of 2010, the market&#8217;s going to turn,&#8221; says Barnes, a vice president in the Seattle office of Jones Lang LaSalle.<\/p>\n<p>Vacancy rates will rise, they predict. Lease rates will drop. Tenants will smile.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The article goes into pretty good depth as to the amount of space coming on line both in terms of new construction and space coming available from existing tenants.<\/p>\n<p>The second story was about <a title=\"Olympic Boat Centers files for bankruptcy protection\" href=\"http:\/\/seattletimes.nwsource.com\/html\/businesstechnology\/2008063577_webolyboat21.html\">Olympic Boat Centers filing for bankruptcy protection<\/a>.\u00a0 For those who don&#8217;t know it, Olympic Boat Center is a Redmond-based &#8220;seller of boats and yachts including Bayliner, Maxum, Meridian and Trophy&#8221;.\u00a0 Boats purchases\u00a0are highly subject to\u00a0discretionary income &#8211; and are typically hit hard in an economic downturn, so this news isn&#8217;t all that surprising.\u00a0 When I saw the article &#8211; I figured that it must be exposure to the California market that was dragging them down.\u00a0 This could be the case, but when I dug deeper, I noted that they have 8 locations in California as compared to 11 in Washington\/BC &#8211; so they are not completely weighted to the California economy.\u00a0\u00a0A few months ago, I noted that they had closed their location on Bel-Red Road.\u00a0\u00a0 At the time, \u00a0I\u00a0figured they must be moving to newer and fancier digs.\u00a0\u00a0It seems I was mistaken.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There were a couple of stories in the Seattle Times over the weekend pertaining to the health of the local economy.\u00a0 The first was an article on the commercial real estate market, highlighting a forecast for falling rents.
