I have been biking to work for 6 years now (we just have 1 vehicle for the family, a mini-van for my wife). I do it to save money (i.e. gas/insurance, etc) and keep healthy. I do
not ride my bike out of any desire to save the environment or help national security by reducing a dependency on foreign oil.
One of these days I'll put a sticker on my bike saying "my other car is an SUV" just to get all the tree-huggers off my back assuming we are kindred spirits when they see me cycling.

I've been commuting by bike for all 12 years I've lived in Seattle. I was year-round and daily when living in Fremont and working downtown. In Snoreline, where we moved 3 years ago, I've become more of a fair-weather biker, which gets me on it for about half my commutes.
My work moved to a place with plentiful free parking, we recently had a kid, and my commute length tripled, so I ride less than I used to, but it's still my primary mode of exercise.
It is simply much more pleasant than driving in traffic for me, keeps me in decent shape, and though this was more true Fremont to downtown - it's often quicker or at least just as quick as driving at rush hour.
It has little with saving the planet. I now have 3 vehicles, none which get more than 25 MPG.

I love , but I'm in the same boat as well, in that I ride for totally selfish reasons. It's way cheaper, gets me my exercise, is faster than sitting in traffic, and is overall a more pleasant experience, even when it's raining.
We still have two vehicles, the Saturn (30+ mpg) and a 4-cylinder '97 Sonoma pickup (~22 mpg). Fuel efficiency was pretty much the top priority when we selected both our vehicles, but again that's for entirely selfish financial reasons.

Well...I'm the unemployed guy you insensitive clod!
In L.A. I pretty much walk to where I'm going. Sure...I can use my bike but really...what's the rush...I like to stop and smell the roses.
Driving for me is a passion. So most of the time you'll only find me driving on some fun twisties such as Mulholland Drive.
Since I have been here it's pretty much been all foot power as I left my bike in L.A. I plan on keeping it that way too for the most part.
