jon, if it causes more harm to the US (more terrorism, beheadings, whatever), are you still okay with it?

I've been long convinced that terrorists target the US for good reason, because we're often the bad guys. So I'm convinced that being the good guys, including by not waterboarding, is best for us. One man's terrorist is another man's patriot. While there are surely some rotten people in the world who will kill toddlers for no good reason, most of them are Americans I believe.

Something that I think is really important to remember is that we never did torture POW's prior to Iraq 2. In fact, our good and fair treatment of POW's is often times spoken of having saved thousands of lives during WWII. The German soldiers all rushed to surrender to US forces, but fought to the death against the Russians, because they knew what would happen to them with both parties.

I guess my question would be, do you think that Russians were justified in torturing and killing german soldiers? How about Japan with US, Chinese and Korean soldiers? Was it OK for Vietnamese to torture US POW's?

While most people in the US don't care about the Geneva Convention, or rather don't really understand it, most people in the world do.

If you are going to be a moral authority on ANYTHING as a person, group or country, then you need to be above reproach.

The damage that torturing has done to our standing in the world is going to take alot to repair.

Good post. I would say we start wars based on fabricated evidence. The good news is that some 48% of voters didn't approve of all this from the beginning. Next month it may be over 50%. The nation's integrity can be rebuilt. If Obama does not immediately make the torture illegal again, I'll know we're doomed, and deserve whatever the world metes on us.
