To me as a layman, it's starting to look like the goverment is putting themselves in the position to prop up any company that employs large numbers of people any time it is having financial troubles. Too Big To Fail, as it were. Wall Street. Auto. Airlines? What about large employers like Wal-Mart? Where's the line? That is my fear -- companies reap the benefits of the good times, and get handouts from the government during bad times. All upside and no downside, privatize profit and socialize loss, with the taxpayers on the hook. No incentive to actually run a lean and profitable business, no fear of ramifications from the decisions made. The government will help. Bah.

What's wrong with us? This thread was meant to point out how Robroy (and others) love to compare entirely benign things to Nazis. It wasn't meant to cover serious economic questions.

In other words, how did an off-topic thread end up so far off topic?

Mussolini had a political/economic theory called fascism. Painting fascism with broad brush strokes, he wanted to merge government and industry in a way that he believed would stand for a thousand years.

Therefore, all of this government privitization of banks is a step towards fascism.

Therefore the current government is like one of Hitler's partners.

No, you were on the right track. Given that Dubya had pretty amazing Executive Powers, we were on our way in that direction.

Not really. I was using a very narrow definition of fascism. In truth, the definitions for fascism are all over the map. Everyone seems to think it means something different. I bet Mussolini didn't even have a good definition of what he wanted.

The only thing everyone can agree on it that it was based on the analogy of a bunchof stick tied together into an unbreakable bundle.

If I were to try my hand at a Robroy Nazi Analogy I would start with the 3 foundational principals (ignoring Hitler as an attempt to move outside the box).

1) Analogy must involve Jews. After all, no other group in history has been picked on like they have - note the systematic/widespread abuse of Native Americans, Blacks, Gypsies, Armenians, Palestinians, Aborigines, Indian Untouchables, women, homosexuals, and perhaps Neanderthals (it's possible Homo Sapiens killed them off) cannot be considered as it cheapens the comparison of oneself as an older, white male to the Jew's plight.

2) Analogy must include gross misstatements of history: E.g. exactly two leaders in history ever ran on the mantra hope and change - Hitler and Satan.

3) Analogy must not actually be analogous. Simply stating the misconstrued historical argument and then comparing one's future self to the Jews is not only sufficient, but ample.



So, I refer you to the new Nazi analogy: Rome. In 1994, when I saw how powerful this nation had become, I started telling literally everyone I met how this was like when the Romans took control of Israel and during the Maccabean Revolt, the candles burned for 8 days instead of 1. It was that kind of miracle that I knew would be required for me and those like me to survive the coming darkness. You know, there's been only 2 nations that have tried to control the world - Rome and Satan (in the garden of Eden). I think USA will be the third.

Its getting pretty scary out there with some of the right wing crazies.

A lot of them seem to have just gone off the rails...

What is interesting is that they're becoming what they hate. They hate William Ayers, the Weathermen, Blank Panthers, etc of the 60s who were leftists that carried out violent acts against the government -- and they're the ones most petrified by the thought of terrorism. Before long we're going to be seeing right wing bombings, assassinations of democratic political figures, killings of abortion doctors, etc. All this happened under Clinton, but I'm worried that there doesn't seem to be any calls for restraint.

All that the left wing did after Bush stole the election(s) was to threaten to move to Canada or Europe and/or wish that we could split the country into the United States of Canada and Jesusland (that latter offer still stands).
