1 parking space per unit in nearly every Seattle condo?

Postby Puget Sounder » Mon Mar 05, 2007 7:32 am

I've been looking through a bunch of MLS listings, and have noticed one constant about Seattle condos.

They consistently have 1 parking space per unit.

Call me overly car dependent -- but it's a bit silly to assume that dual income couples buying 2 bedroom condos in say -- Ballard, Fremont, or Queen Anne Hill -- will be able to depend on at least one person being able to work from home or get by with public transportation for a daily commute.

What are your thoughts? Would monthly parking in a private lot be the only way to have a second car in these areas? Street parking is really awful in the "cores" of all these neighborhoods.

I lived for over 8 years renting a condo on Fremont, half a block for the Dubliner (definitely what you would call "The Core"). If you call sometimes having to walk a block awful, then yeah, it was awful.

I'm comparing it to circling in the upper east side of NYC for an hour, triple parking, walking 20 blocks to your apt. Now occasionally having to walk a block doesn't seem so awful.

Puget,

I have one parking spot and 2 cars. Luckily for me, my work pays for my parking, so I leave my work vehicle at work and walk in to the office everyday. Parking on the street isn't that difficult in Belltown, as long as you are at work by 8:30 or so.

C'mon! You guys know that the 10-15% guaranteed appreciation on those condos will allow people to easily pay for those $200/mo extra parking spaces on the monthly lots, as well as a new H3 to park in it.

It's all relative to what city you are in. Some cities it is a nightmare finding parking.

I had a friend who's mother lived in San Fran...had to street park...whenever she was lucky enough to get within a block of her house she would leave her car parked for a few days and take the bus.

Manhattan...can't even compare. The garage near the hotel that I stay on the UWS charges $5-600 a month to park your car. It's not self park either as they have to jockey the cars in and out so count on tipping each time you come and go.

L.A. depending on the area parking can actually be a real PITA...but this is the only place I have EVER seen a 1BR condo advertised with THREE parking spaces.

L.A. people and their cars...sheesh.
