Stuff White People Like: Gentrification

  • Wow, you grew up in a different part of the south than I did, then. There's some amount of racism everywhere it seems, but I've seen nothing like the south. There's a reason the KKK are from Vidor, Texas. Having a dearth of black people does not make a place racist. I've seen more accepted diversity here -- Chinese, Indian, African, Persian, Arabic -- than anywhere I ever lived in Texas. There are places in the south where being racially different can be literally life-threatening.

    Edit: Fixed typo.
  • Agreed.

    Going to high school in SC, blatant racism was an every-day occurence.

    That's a great way to sidestep intelligent debate -- simply call something a "conspiracy theory" or labeling someone "paranoid."

    I'd say what I think of your own posts at an emotional level, but notice how I abstained and did not mention it here.

    Do we see a learning opportunity for both of you?

    Great way to sidestep intelligent debate -- simply call something a "conspiracy theory." You must be watching too much TV.

    I simply illustrated how your statements about "truth" and what you should and should not believe (Leaders! The media!) compares very closely with the standard understanding of "tin foil" conspiracy theorists. 95% of the people reading your rants will put you into that category. I will debate intelligently when debate is presented in an intelligent manner. Stereo-typing races, and telling people what to do is not an intelligent debate. It's just *ranting*.

    BTW, how do you know how much TV I watch? Is this another way of having intelligent debate? I must assume it is, otherwise you wouldn't have done it. I will, therefore engage with this "debate":

    <Intelligent debate>
    Dude, you read too many crazy "hate the white people" websites! You're a total reverse racist a-hole, probably eating too much rice! (did I get the appalling ethnic stereotype correct? Hope so, as attacking and demeaning the person you're debating with is an essential technique that helps win the debate)

    I bet the only reason you got a job was because the company you work for had a quota to fill. (now I'm making assumptions about *you* and "the system" in order to reinforce my own beliefs. Hopefully people reading this will therefore discredit your statements regardless of their content, because of my excellent slur)

    Last time I debated like this was when i was five years old! (intelligent debate is seemingly done best when implying the person you are debating with is very young, and therefore stupid and immature. Thanks for passing this great tip on to me! I'll use it to win future intelligent debates)

    </intelligent debate>

    I have a better idea. Why don't you stop trying to determine who is right and who is wrong? We are all right, because we all separately live the lives we are living. Is this not obvious? There is no such thing as a wrong opinion, or an opinion that must be repressed, denounced, or debated. What is the purpose of ramming your ego down another person's throat? The thrill of the kill should be reserved for your offline activities, where it's more appropriate.

    I call 'em as I see 'em.

    What do you mean that you would say it? You just said it right there. And how is your whitey rant not emotional?

    Yes, I learned that you believe that racist ramblings are a great foundation for "intelligent debate".

    That's also what I managed to extract from this little chat.

    Amazing. May I remind you of some of your choice nuggets of wisdom earlier today. Reflect inwards, and consider your hypocrisy.

    "Do not trust the TV. Do not trust the mainstream media. Do not trust false leaders."
    (You seem to be ramming your ego down everyone's throat here)

    "Do we see a learning opportunity for both of you?"
    (I thought that my opinion could not be wrong? What is it that I need to learn? You seem to be indicating I am "wrong" otherwise I wouldn't need to learn, but I thought:

    "There is no such thing as a wrong opinion"
    (Jackpot!)

    Oh, and I like how you edited your previous post to get rid of some of the "whitey" stuff, and other ignorant hate speech. I suppose you must have read them back to yourself and thought "jeez, I kinda ruined that whole 'high ground' thing I was going for" and decided your intelligent debate wasn't do intelligent, but more the ramblings of racist. Is that how it happened?
  • LHR, I actually grew up around Vidor, around 20 miles to the east in Orange. The KKK are not FROM Vidor. Try Pulaski, TN.

    You guys talk about racism in the South. Ever been to Hazleton, PA? How about Kennewick? Racism is everywhere, not just in the South. For Seattle to claim that everyone gets along all shiny happy people-like is just ludicrous.

    Hell, most people here won't give you the time of day if you weren't born in the 3 county area.

    Where are all the black people up here if it's so diverse and tolerant?
  • Since when is black population the barometer of racism? I have no doubt there's some racism in Washington. As I said, it's everywhere. But I've seen nothing like the racism of the South. Not even close up here, and I've seen much more multiculturalism and tolerance for other races and cultures in the Seattle metro than I ever saw even in places like Dallas.
  • Where are all the black people up here if it's so diverse and tolerant?

    So...all racism is white-towards-black? Black people flee racist areas and head towards tolerant ones?

    How about the other way around? Where are all the white people in Kenya? Guess that proves just how racists they are!

    Besides, Seattle is quite multicultural. It just happens that we have more people of Asian decent than African. Go to Microsoft. Heck, go to the UW; it's probably about 40% 'minority'. For what it's worth, my hypothesis is that white Americans are probably now the least racist cultural group in all of history. Which isn't to say the problem is solved, but man have we come a long way.
