Let's Bankrupt the Nation

I kept hearing that refrain on the global warming thread. If we spend money on clean transportation it will cost too much.

Here's an interesting article suggesting just how much money we could actually save.
What hasn't been acknowledged is that the automobile is supported by a government subsidy that dwarfs anything provided to mass transit. How big is the subsidy? By my (admittedly extremely crude) calculations, it could total nearly $1 trillion per year.

  • The author made a correction to the article regarding the amount. It is actually approximated at $100 billion which is still a lot but is much less than $1 trillion.
  • Well, shoot. That's only an order of magnitude. Alright everyone, ignore this then. Not nearly so big of a deal.
  • A billion here, a billion there... Pretty soon you're talking real money.
