We May Get Hillary After All

edited August 2008 in Everything Else
I've been following the story about Obama's "forged birth certificate" for a few weeks now. I didn't take it very seriously though. However, the story seems to be getting legs, and evidence.

This link links to the original story at Isreali Insider, but I start here because it has "interesting" comments, especially the ones about Hillary: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-new ... 2/posts#14

  • Wow! If it's on freepublic it must be fact.

Both McCain and Obama are American Citizens from birth. They each have 1+ parents who are American Citizens, which is all you need. So, even though McCain was born outside of the states, he can run. And even if Obama were born at the south pole he could run.

This is just - I guess - wishful thinking by hard-core republicans who believe they stand a better chance running against Clinton than Obama (I tend to agree that they would BTW).
  • but, but, it has an american flag on the site!
  • It would be delicious if Obama got disqualified because of a technicality, seeing as how he used those same tactics to remove opponents from the ballot in Chicago. However, the bitterness left by the process would be severely damaging to the country. If the document is a forgery, then that might help, but I'm there would still be a huge amount of lingering resentment.
  • I already saw those pictures and I even think it was posted on freerepublic. Wasn't the "forgery" just some compression artifacts? And didn't dozens of commentors on freerepublic quickly point it out?
  • Ah, conspiracy theorists.

I'm not usually one to point out racial tensions. I think they are overblown and that if everybody could just take a timeout for 10-20 years that the whole thing would blow over. That said, if such a thing were to happen there would be an uproar the likes of which we haven't seen in a very long time. I mean, if the first black candidate with a legitimate chance to win were disqualified on a technicality...well, a lot of people might take that as work of "The Man".

Not really. As I mentioned in my original post, the original article is in Isreali Insider. I started with FR because they had some interesting comments - on both sides of the issue.

You do not understand this. For what it is worth, your position is exactly what mine was when I first heard about it. It has changed. Not that I think he is not a citizen, but rather that this may actually have legs. It is more complicated than either of us first assumed.

    Originally, yes. This is new.
  • Some guy called "Techdude" claiming he has done analysis on a scanned copy of the birth certificate is evidence?

Wake me up when you've got an independent expert working on an original copy...

And if its true that means that his sister who was born in indonesia now has a hawaiian birth certificate, so it means that the discovery of the forgery has now discovered another document which shouldn't exist. That should make it less likely that this forgery ever occurred, but instead to conspiracy theorists this just corroborates the forgery...

No. There is a bit more to it than that.

On the other hand, "Buckhead" at freerepublic.com is the one who, 59 minutes after the broadcast, said the early '70's documents on 60 minutes looked like they were made with word. That one post lead to the demise of Dan Rather. And one of the most interesting "coraborations" is that many Bush Haters actually thought Buckhead was the source of the forgeries because he nailed it so fast. ;)

This particular "forged document" thing is still developing, as the Dan Rather one did. That one didn't depend on Buckhead to get legs, nor will this one depend on Techdude.
And to be clear, just because the former was forgeries, this has yet to be confirmed with the latter. Something does look funny here, but it may not be for the reasons people suspect. It may be something completely innocent. We'll see.
  • the birth certificate has a watermark behind it and has been scanned and compressed. with that garbage as input you can probably read the tea leaves to claim it originally said anything that you want to.

with the dan rather letter you didn't have to try to digitally enhance it.

Which is why this one may prove to be authentic.
