I got a chuckle out of it anyway. But are there really people like that?

  • I don't know...unless they are in the biz, I haven't met anyone like that.

What I have met (in triplicate) is the middle aged person who lost it all in the stock market, and now thinks that because the only investment they have ever made that paid off was the house they bought in 1995, that real estate is the only smart investment around.
  • Yes, I do know people like that. They are now looking for work because they are real estate professionals who haven't made a sale in months. I don't go to their house and blab about my profession but yet they feel the need to bore me with their incessant yapping.
  • Actually being a real estate agent I constantly meet people who want to talk about real estate all of the time. Although these are usually the people who go to the flipper seminars and spend thousands on books and classes and never actually buy a house, because their credit is in the crapper because of all the money they spend on get rich quick schemes.

I remember one guy who came to two of our real estate investment seminars. They were free and basically the gist of our seminar was, "buy a house. Live in it. When it's time to move, keep your current house as a rental and move into your new house." Long term, boring investing. No get rich quick.

After hearing the same thing twice, that there's no get-rich quick scheme in real estate and that the guys who run those seminars are in the seminar business, not in the real estate business, he runs up to my boss and says, "Hey, I don't have any money or credit history, but I found this great house!!! It has no toilets in it!!!!!!"

I meet usually one of these people in about every 4th open house that I do.
