Great Depression

edited June 2007 in The Economy
My wife just commented that a lot of people made a lot of money during the Great Depression. If we enter a new period of severe economic recessions, what sort of investments do you expect will do well?

Comments

  • food and toilet paper....not the products...the producers.

too bad Cargill is privately held.

    Just my dumb guess though.
  • Alcohol, especially the hard liquor producers such as Seagrams, etc.

Also, anyone in the foodservice industry as well as railroads (cheaper than trucks) and coal producers.
  • Funny you should mention railroads, Warren Buffet just bought a huge stake in two.
  • I think that Warren Buffet also commented on how Bill Gates invested in railroads before he did, that Gates has already made a nice return, and that he wishes he had realized the value there too.
  • Actually, you need to look at timing. While Bill Gates may be quite rich, he got that way by being a bit of a snake. Steal the mouse/screen interface from Xerox idea from them because they didn't patent it and move out of your parent garage. He's no God of investment. Warren Buffet on the other hand, he has an actual regimen of investment. I think he purchased railroads when he did due to the timing of certain economic factors, if you wish I can provide the link to the article that states this. Bill Gates is an asshole, yes a rich asshole, but still that doesn't make him a super duper smart dude, just, well, an asshole.
Warren Buffet is a cut above him, the reason they do business, I believe is because Warren Buffet sees the necessity of giving back and will join ventures with the Gates to do so.
Rant on, I'm sure all you Seattlites will be tearing me up defending Billy boy, but remember, it's just my 0.02.
  • Hmm... Seagrams doesn't seem to exist as a company any more. Their mixers were sold off to Coca-cola and their distillery was closed in 2006.

Um, you might check your history on this one. Look under "Jobs, Steve". Bill just copied him :)
  • The booze thing is always a good investment from what I have heard. We were actually taught that in one of my econ or business classes (can't remember which) It was something like "people drink when the economy is good to celebrate and people drink when it's bad as they are depressed"

    Well...

Lets narrow it down. How 'bout just investing in addictive substances?

    Booze AND Tobacco! :D

If you add gambling you have VICEX.....

I find it somewhat humorous that someone would actually put together a mutual fund like VICEX.

...The fund invests primarily in equity securities of small, medium and large capitalization companies. It normally invests at least 80 % of net assets in equity securities of companies that derive a significant portion of their revenues from products often considered socially irresponsible....

    Check it out.
