Forums are bad

I agree with SLTO that the forums will hurt discussion on seattlebubble. It is too 'big' and takes to much effort to check.

I vote for either removing the forums or combining all topics into a single group.

  • I think it takes some getting used to, I chat on several forums like this on topics ranging from hiking to car repair and find this to be a versatile format. A feature such as "Latest Posts" or "Last 24 hours of activity" might be helpful, however.

I also noticed on some other "bubble" blogs such as bostonbubble.com where forums were the primary format for discussion and seems to be working well for them.

I personally think it's a better way to process large amounts of posts/replies than a long, single thread. It's also a lot easier to search against.

Just my 2 cents (or my $349,000 house )
  • It's really quite easy to see if a new comment is made as the falg on the left turns yellow.
  • I much prefer the forums to the comment fields of the blog. It's nice to have a multitude of topics & subforums to choose from and there are more options with HTML.
  • Also, here is an easy way to see the posts since your last visit:

    http://seattlebubble.com/forum/search.p ... d=newposts

Upon login, this will be at the top right hand corner of the main forum page.
  • I like the forums. It lets topics last for more than one day, since open threads disappear or lose relevence when a new one is created. It also gives more of a sense of community IMO. It's more than Tim's topics with some minor offhand comments by others -- it's all of us together. I say keep it around.
  • I take it all back. Leave the forums. I was wrong.
  • I think Tim should stop posting open-threads-for discussion on the blog & just rely on forums for discussion.
  • Ditto. I've enjoyed the forums a lot more during Tim's trip & break from posting open threads.
  • ...and in some ways, Tim's short-vacation was the best thing to happen for the forums :-)
  • Psst. Here's a secret. That was the plan all along. I was hoping that the lack of open threads would give the forums a real kick in the pants. Looks like it worked?

    You're a genius
  • To me this whole site is a useful learning tool for people.

However...I think that the commentary that Tim provides is what makes the "class" more interesting and fun.

You'd make a great professor Tim.
