Shorts in winter

edited March 2007 in Seattle Culture
Whats' up with the people who wear shorts on cold rainy days? is this some kind of denial thing? Are these Washington natives, or California transplants who do not want to face the reality of less desireable weather? Is this a "statement" of some kind? Just trying to figure this one out.

  • I grew up in Buffalo, and moved here directly from Illinois, and commuted exclusively by bike.

The first year I was here, I was simply amazed that it was never cold. Ever. Shorts were all I ever wanted to wear. It was the mildest weather I'd ever experienced.

Then I acclimated after about a year, and now I'm a wimp with multiple layers like the rest of you. ;)

There are more Midwestern immigrants that move to Seattle than California immigrants, BTW, contrary to the common misconception. You are probably seeing folks from Illinois.
  • During the work week i wear shorts mostly because I can. I have an amazing office that tolerates that sort of thing. Basically a matter of comfort. If I am in doors for 99% of the day why not? Typically for me, once the weather hits 60 degrees I'm all over wearing shorts.
