Craigslist stats for all listings and Seattle expanded.
I am very interested on the inventory numbers for Seattle this year. So I am taking Dgeng's great post and expanding it.
This is what I did.
Seattle
1) click real estate for sale
2) search for Seattle
12/23/2007 - 1217 listings
Seattle and all surrounding areas
1) click real estate for sale
2) leave search blank
3) put in minimum of 1 dollar

I can think of two possible explanations. 1) Lots of new sellers. 2) Sellers are becoming frustrated with their agents and trying to do something themselves.
Either way, 9000 homes would have been high for the MLS 18 months ago, and now we've passed that on craig's list. I do wonder how many of those are duplicates though. Does anyone know how quickly home listing expire on CL?

Posts expire after 7 days. There is a very high rate of duplication in rentals, with some places being listed twice a day, so I would envision the same for FS listings. Anyone who watches how CL works would probably be reposting their house daily to keep it near the top.
By the way, the 9000 is basically all of Western WA. You will find listings from Seattle, Tacoma, Bellevue/Redmond, Everett, Olympia, as well as distant burbs like Chehalis, Ellensburg, Bellingham, and so forth.
With respect to who is posting them, a lot of the listings are agents trying to get more exposure for their MLS listings.
