I think it's 40/40/20 upper/middle/bottom, not 20/40/40. I'm pretty sure there won't be a lot of hiring be either Boeing or Microsoft this year, so both should see 2-5% decreases in staff just through retirements and departures. Attrition reduct…

About the only thing politically interesting the last couple weeks has been the Minnesota re-re-re-re-recount and Bill Richardson turning down his nomination. Actually, I sorta wish RobRoy was still around. I'd love to have read the right wing…

I moved here to get away from this crap. Guess that San Diego beach house is starting to look better. * I ordered snow tires for my car Dec 15. Original delivery date Dec 18. Still don't have them. Thanks, UPS, for your gross incompetence at…

The anger is being taken out on the Big 3. Every time I point out that all the terms being lobbed at GM/F/C/UAW - "gross mismanagement", "inept", "broken business model", etc - apply in spades to Wall Street everybody says that banking "is differen…

Who in their right mind thought that heap of crap is worth $483.5k?

Somewhat tangential to Tim's comments on Mr Scott, but one of my pet peeves is with sports commentators who make these elaborate pre-season predictions about who is going to win and who is going to be playing for good draft picks. These guys are pr…

Most of the nation's stores kicked-off the critical holiday shopping season with double-digit sales declines, portending more price-cuts in December and raising questions about the long-term prospects for many retailers. Guess it wasn't that go…

Accurate revision.

The numbers were better because all the retailers were (are) having crazy sales. Revenue will be OK, profits will not. It's likely that people are spending some of the gas savings, but for most people that's only $50-100/mo since August.

Something I've often mentioned in regards to the GM/F/C debacle is that in the 80s, there was a corporate culture shift away from long term viability into maximizing quarterly profits*. In the early 80s, they routinely kept 1-2 years of operating r…
