Macy's cuts 750 Seattle jobs

edited February 2008 in The Economy
Quote from the P-I:
Department store operator Macy's Inc. said Wednesday it will cut about 2,300 management jobs, including 750 in Seattle, as it consolidates three regional divisions and decentralizes buying in a bid to reduce costs and boost sales.

The announcement came as Macy's announced separately that it had a steeper-than-expected drop in sales in January at established stores. Shares fell almost 5 percent on the news.
Holy cow, Macy's has/had 750 management jobs in Seattle?

  • goodbye, old Bon Marche staffers...
  • Seattle? Just as I expected. None of the cut jobs are in Downtown Redmond. Phew.
  • Nothing to see here, move on please.

I mean seriously, in any story on local real estate, have you ever seen the following in print:

    " . . . and our housing market will stay strong because we've got Boeing, Microsoft, Weyerhauser, and Macy's . . . "

Yup, say goodbye to the last local connection to the old Bon Marche. I knew when they (temporarily) renamed it 'Bon Macy's' that the Bon's days were numbered. Not hard to connect the dots on this one.

I'm not terribly surprised. I'd be curious about the salary structure of the 750 people - I assume it's mostly < $20/hr jobs.

Say hello to a bunch of vacant condos/rentals downtown!
