YouTube's "Related Videos"

edited May 2008 in Everything Else
I was visiting my parents this weekend and I pulled up my recent video appearance on YouTube and was met with an amusing sight. As of right now the "Related Videos" to the right of the player are rather amusing. Here's a screenshot for posterity.

Notice the second item on the list: Jem Intro. Seeing as how that is the theme song for a 1980s cartoon about a little girls' doll, it's hard to imagine how that could be considered "related."

...except that frequent commenter Alan linked to the video as a joke in a recent thread. Apparently YouTube determines "relation" by either links or who's viewing the same set of videos.

When I saw that video on the related list, it cracked me up. Good one, Alan.

  • Too funny. Thanks for pointing that out, Tim.
  • I say YouTube is doing their job well. I found both videos to be about equally entertaining.

Likewise, are their any YouTube videos of Realtors(R) talking up the market? I'd like to get those linked to that lemmings video Disney(TM) did where they forced lemmings off a cliff.

You know, that idea has some real potential. Like a Google Bomb, but for YouTube. I wonder if its possible for videos that have tens of thousands of views. Notice that while the Jem video is showing on my video's related list, mine doesn't show on its list.

I bet if we got a few of the really popular housing bubble blogs (i.e. - HousingPanic) to link to the lemmings video and some specific realtor video (using the keyword lemmings) on the same page, it could have an effect.
