Washington State Economy & State Budget
Gregoire on the campaign trail in 2008:
Oh well.
Gregoire's spokeswoman today:When I came into office, I inherited a 2.2 billion dollar deficit. I balanced the budget, I invested, I've turned it into a surplus, and today--yes, today--we have money in the bank. We're one of the few states that does, but we have money in the bank.
The P-I on the ever-increasing budget gap in Olympia:She wants people to understand that it's going to get worse before it gets better.
If only someone had warned us, so we could have been more responsible with the state's money, saving it during the boom and resisting the urge to expand government spending... Perhaps someone in some sort of high-ranking position in state government, like some sort of money expert or economist or something. What will that budget look like?
"Pick a bad adjective, look it up in your thesaurus and then pick a worse one," House Finance Committee Chairman Ross Hunter, D-Bellevue, said last week. His choice: "horrific."
Senate Ways and Means Committee Chairwoman Margarita Prentice, D- Renton, settled on "horrendous" to describe the impending budget cuts. "My expectation is that we will be making some heartbreaking decisions," she said. "Taking votes we figured we would never, ever have to take."
Oh well.
