Buy in the winter sucks because the supply is limited to either garbage or things incredibly overpriced and no motivated seller. I would wait for spring just for that alone, if you horizon is really 10-15+ years you want to have the best options ava…

Do you find it funny that the galley on that boat as been "flipped"? Faux granite with stainless steel appliances, I guess you cannot escape them even by sea.

The precipitous drop like that in Cali and other areas occurs the year after the initial price declines. That is when everyone who pulled their house this year, or decided to wait and never listed stick them all on the market in Spring at a slight d…

It was also our policy until Reagan dismantled the mental health system in the 1980's. A large majority of the homeless problem in every city could be solved with free in-patient mental health services.

I agree with most everything on here. My advice to anyone moving anywhere is do not buy right away (unless you've lived in the area before). I have lived in several places all over the country and I know for sure I would have regretted buying a plac…

You should reply: If the market is so hot why are you cold calling me? Don't you have customers lined up out the door you can be helping instead?

How much longer before its actually cheaper to live in LA or SF than Seattle?

The Case-Shiller index agrees with you, the latest data showed that Jan 08 sales were back to Aug 06 levels. I would guess that CS in March, when its available, will show a similar relationship back to 06 prices.

one.person - You are not going to like this answer, but if previous bubbles around the country are any indication then you won't see the bottom in Seattle until something like 2011. Its a long way out there, so you are going to have to hold tight…

If you go far enough east you end up on Bainbridge.

Markor - Will you post about your Easton -> Cle Elum move in 10 years in this thread?

How much do you want to bet the "our mortgage lender ROCKS" person probably never read the papers and will be in the Seattle Times a year from now complaining how about they were tricked? "We didn't realize our payment would triple in 3 years, our b…

I should add that I think part of your problem is that you are renting rooms. That is fine if you are in college, but it grows old really fast (as you have found). A decent 1bd apartment can be found easily for a tech nerds salary, there is no reaso…

If you end up moving, just don't buy for a while until you are sure you love it. There is no reason to buy in Seattle or anywhere right now, prices are declining everywhere and in my opinion it is a terrible idea to purchase a home immediately somew…

I agree on #2, that is the only way to get out ahead in this bubble. Cash out now while you still can then sit and buy those houses you want for the price your current house sells for. Otherwise its just a wash and you are leaving money on the table.

Renters insurance is cheap enough that its probably not worth doing too much comparison shopping. I have used a couple companies (I currently have SafeCo) and its always the same $120-150/year.

You need to play hardball with your landlord. He can ask for whatever he wants in an increase and you need to counter. Too many people just pay the piper, which is probably why he demands such ludicrous increases. Come back to him and let him know t…

Markor - Your assumption is based on all of that cheap office space being filled up by companies flocking from areas far away to lease in downtown Bellevue. If they are simply moving from one place to another within the area (far more likely) it …

have you ever lived in a city before? if not, you should definitely live somewhere downtown for a while. if you have, then you probably want to live on the eastside if you are tired of it all. also be warned, most in-city seattlites become hipster d…

pumpkin, For two apparently rich professionals, one of whom is an attorney, you sure are suckers. Why haven't you sued your landlord yet and demanded your rent payments back, if the condition of the house is what you are describing? I've never ha…

pumpkin wrote: And our rent is only about $500 less than a future house payment would be if we could buy for $625K or less. Assuming a $500k mortgage, your rent must be around $2700. If you are renting a house for that much and its flooding…

Why do you have to immediately buy something? I think its generally a big mistake to immediately purchase a home in an area you know absolutely nothing about, especially in todays market. Declining values mean that if you chose a neighborhood you en…
